One thing that has always bugged me, and I’m sure it does most of you,
is to sit down at the dinner table only to be interrupted by a phone
call from a telemarketer. I decided, on one such occasion, to try to
be as irritating to them as they were to me. This particular call
happened to be from AT&T and it went something like this:

Das Model Natalia Perewersewa hat überraschend deutlich die Politik in Russland kritisiert. Anlass: Die 24-Jährige wurde von den Organisatoren des jährlichen Schönheitswettbewerbs «Miss Earth» über ihre Heimat befragt — wie die anderen Kandidatinnen des diesmal auf den Philippinen stattfinden Wettbewerbs.

Anfangs antwortete Perewersewa auch harmlos und lobend: Russland sei «eine Art Kuh mit sehr großen Augen, lustigen Hörnern und einem immer sehr großen Mund, die immer süße Milch gibt». Aber dann sagte sie plötzlich, Russland werde «erbarmungslos in Stücke gerissen von gierigen, unehrlichen und ungläubigen Menschen».

Präsident Wladimir Putin erwähnte sie zwar nicht namentlich, aber sie prangerte auch die Korruption, und die niedrige Löhne und Renten in ihrem Land an: «Mein Russland ist ein Bettler. Mein Russland kann älteren Menschen und Waisen nicht helfen», zitierte der britische «Daily Telegraph» aus ihren Antworten. Ingenieure, Ärzte und Lehrer seien auf der Flucht, weil sie «nichts zu leben» hätten. «Mein Russland ist ein endloser Kaukasus-Krieg.»

Natalia Perewersewa war vor zwei Jahren auch «Miss Moskau» und gewann im vergangenen Jahr den landesweiten Schönheitswettbewerb.

Моя Россия не может помочь старым людям и сиротам», — цитирует британская Дэйли Телеграф ее ответы. Наталья  Переверзева два года назад была признана «Мисс Москва», а в прошлом году выиграла национальный конкурс красоты.

En un ejemplo de independencia real que debería ser imitado en toda nuestra región, la Corte Suprema de Brasil acaba de condenar a uno de los políticos alguna vez considerado uno de los más poderosos dentro del Partido de los Trabajadores, fuerza política que gobierna el país.

La condena impuesta es realmente dura, pues impone al reo casi once años de prisión por haber sido el organizador de un vasto esquema de corrupción, en función del cual diversos legisladores de la oposición recibieron entre 2003 y 2005 una mensualidad oculta en compensación por su compromiso secreto de votar a favor de algunos proyectos de leyes considerados importantes por el gobierno del ex presidente Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

El ex funcionario condenado es José Dirceu, de 66 años, que alguna vez fue considerado una suerte de intocable. Por ello, la sentencia, que privilegia la ética, tendrá seguramente un impacto sustantivo en el universo político del país vecino.

Russia’s Defense Industry Purges Reformers

The main reason behind Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision last week to remove Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov has become clearer in recent days with the subsequent firing of Chief of Staff Gen. Nikolai Makarov and other senior defense officials and military officers in Russia’s Ministry of Defense. Taken together, the dismissals suggest that the shakeup was not due primarily to sex scandals, corrupt practices or alienation of the officer corps, as has been claimed by various observers. Rather, the purge was the result of a power struggle over who should control the distribution of the $700 billion that Putin pledged in February to spend on new weapons purchases by 2020.
